The USMLE is rolling out a new test delivery interface: Step 2 CK on May 7, 2026 and Step 1 on May 14, 2026. Med School Bootcamp's question bank is already updated to match. The exam content, scoring, and timing aren't changing, just the interface.
The USMLE is rolling out a new test delivery interface for Step 1 and Step 2 CK in May 2026. Step 3 has been on the new software since March 10, 2026. Step 2 CK transitions on May 7, and Step 1 transitions on May 14.
If your test date falls on or after those dates, here's what's actually changing (and what isn't).
What's Changing
Block structure
The biggest change is structural: blocks are getting shorter and there are more of them. Total items, total exam time, and content are all unchanged.
Break time and tutorial
The new software reallocates time between the on-screen tutorial and break time:
- Tutorial: shortened from a 15-minute optional tutorial to a 5-minute optional tutorial.
- Minimum break time: increased from 45 minutes to 55 minutes.
- Time saved by finishing blocks early or skipping the (now shorter) tutorial still rolls into the break pool, as before.
Software interface
USMLE's official description specifies four categories of interface improvement:
- Updated visual design. A modernized look-and-feel that aligns the Step exam interface with the NBME self-assessment interface students already use.
- Improved keyboard navigation. Better keyboard shortcuts and more efficient question-to-question movement.
- A new settings menu. A centralized, persistent menu for managing the testing environment during the exam.
- Per-image contrast adjustment. A brand-new tool that lets the examinee adjust contrast on each individual clinical image (radiographs, histology, dermatology photos, ECGs).
USMLE has published new "interactive testing experience" tools that mirror the new software:
- New Step 1 testing experience: https://www.starttest.com/custom/usmle/?stpf1
- New Step 2 CK testing experience: https://www.starttest.com/custom/usmle/?stpf2
- New Step 3 testing experience: https://www.starttest.com/custom/usmle/?stpf3
What's NOT Changing
The exam content, scoring, score-reporting timeline, and total seat time have not changed. The content outlines for Step 1 and Step 2 CK are the same. Item formats (vignettes, sequential-item sets, lab values, the no-going-back-to-closed-blocks rule) all work the way they always have.
In other words: your existing prep is still valid. The change is to the wrapper around the exam, not the exam itself.
That's true for Med School Bootcamp's content too. Our question bank and video lessons are continuously updated for the 2026 content outlines, and we ship improvements every week based on student feedback.

Quick Reference
Conclusion
The May 2026 USMLE software update is a meaningful change to how the exam feels —shorter sprints, a cleaner interface, a few new tools — but it's not a change to what's on the exam. Keep studying the way you have been. The content is the same, your prep is still valid, and Med School Bootcamp is already updated to match the interface you'll see on test day.
